Meet Arwen!
In Training Shadows, Arwen is a character with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She is one of the students at Rosehaven Hall alongside Marina and Tess.
She has a dry, dark sense of humor, enjoys painting (but NOT swimming!), and her best friend is named Brynn.
About Spinal Muscular Atrophy:
Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA, is a genetic condition that affects the nerves that control voluntary muscles. Because those nerves do not work the way they should, the muscles gradually become weak and can shrink over time. SMA can affect movements like sitting, standing, walking, lifting the arms, swallowing, or breathing, but the exact symptoms vary widely from person to person.
SMA does not affect intelligence. A person with SMA may use a wheelchair, need help with certain physical tasks, or tire more easily, while still thinking, learning, communicating, and participating in school or work just like anyone else. There are different types and levels of severity, so two people with SMA can have very different abilities and support needs.
